About Speed Movings

A studio for software that has to last.

Speed Movings is an independent technology studio. We build and operate software for organizations that expect their systems to be correct, secure and understandable years after they ship.

Mission

Make software people can trust.

We help organizations replace fragile, opaque systems with software that is small enough to reason about, tested where it matters, and observable in production.

Vision

A quieter kind of technology.

We want technology work to be less noisy and more considered — fewer trends, more attention to how systems behave in the environments they actually run in.

Core values

Six principles we actually use.

Clarity

Say what you mean. Write it down. Prefer the plainer word.

Craft

Care about the parts of the code no one else will see.

Restraint

Build the smallest system that solves the problem.

Ownership

Take responsibility for what happens after we ship.

Honesty

Name tradeoffs early, even when they're inconvenient.

Steadiness

Move at a pace that produces work we'd sign our names to.

Our story

Why we started this.

Speed Movings began as a small group of engineers who wanted to work differently: fewer clients, longer engagements, more written thinking and less performance. The pattern that emerged worked.

Today the studio does the same work at a slightly larger scale, still with small teams per project, still with an emphasis on maintainability over novelty.

Team expertise

What we're strong at.

We're a generalist studio with clusters of depth. The list below is an honest read of where we've done enough serious work to ship confidently on day one.

  • 01

    Systems engineering

Distributed systems, APIs, data pipelines and infrastructure.

  • 02

    Product engineering

Web and mobile applications with a real user in mind.

  • 03

    Platform work

Developer tooling, CI/CD, environments and internal platforms.

  • 04

    Security engineering

Threat modeling, access design and hardening.

  • 05

    Data engineering

    Warehousing, event pipelines, analytics-ready models.

  • 06

    Interface design

Design systems and interaction design paired with engineering.

Working principles

How we make decisions.

  1. 01

Write things down before you build them.

  2. 02

    Prefer boring, well-understood technology.

  3. 03

    Make the failure mode obvious.

  4. 04

Keep code small enough to hold in your head.

  5. 05

Own the operational cost of what you ship.

  6. 06

Leave the system better than you found it.

Technology culture

Curious, written, unhurried.

Our culture is built around long-form writing, thoughtful code review, and open technical debate. We read papers, we prototype regularly, and we don't ship a decision we can't explain.

We work remotely and asynchronously by default. Meetings exist for decisions, not for status updates.

Quality standards

The bar we hold ourselves to.

Reviewed changes

Every merge is reviewed by another engineer.

Automated tests

Meaningful test coverage on the paths that matter.

Observable systems

Structured logs, metrics and traces from day one.

Documented decisions

Architecture records live next to the code.

Written communication is our primary working mode. A short email with the shape of the problem is usually the fastest start.
